Kortom het was een fantastische ervaring waar wij nog lang van zullen nagenieten!

After a late flight to Catania, it was completely dark outside when we arrived in Noto, and without the help of sweet Sicilian Annaelisa it wouldn’t have been easy to reach La Casa Dietro Al Muro. The steep and somewhat rocky road leading to the house was the start to our adventure: our little Twingo – carrying four people and luggage – was moaning and creaking all the way up there, and wasn’t going to make it. We got out of the car, lessening its load… Luckily, larger rental car models were able to make the climb without a hitch.

 

The impressive wall (basically the concept around which the house is built) made us stop in our tracks. Beautifully lit, high and carefully built using a type of local sandstone, it promised well. We stepped through the modest front door, into an oasis of spaciousness, purity and simplicity. Every corner of the house is steeped in an aesthetics that is at one with the environment surrounding it. The windows in the living room, kitchen and bedrooms carefully guide your gaze to diverse bits of nature and culture.

 

The kitchen is comfortable, the bathrooms simple and clean, and it is wonderful to be out on the terraces. With 10 to 12 people, we lived there, cooked, partied (great Sonos installation, by the way), swam (in a real swimming pool, not a playing pool), lounged and enjoyed the sunset on the roof terrace. The house offered plenty of room for each of us to pick a favorite spot.

The pictures on the website didn’t show and trees providing shade, nor parasols, which was somewhat disquieting. But we couldn’t have known that the always present breeze, which we managed to capture even more fully by opening the big windows in the glass corridor, would bring so much coolness and, well, breeziness. The white linen curtains and the decorative light bulbs were constantly swaying in the wind, which was a joyful and playful sight in an otherwise clean and modern interior. Several textile pieces designed and hand-woven by the owners’ daughter Julie were very rightfully given a place of honor inside.

 

The perfect harmony between architecture, nature and culture moved us until the very last day of our stay.

Looking at the gorgeous Sicilian coastline, the Ancient Greeks sure knew how to pick the perfect spot to build a city. This tradition has now been continued by Belgians, with the dream location of La Casa Dietro Al Muro.

​

On the driveway, the monumental, clean wall, built out of sandstone, is immediately striking. This colossal, two-sided wall, which is indicative of the local landscape (and what a work of art that they managed to build this!), can be seen from several places inside the house and is always impressive. It sets the tone and confirms that the villa was designed with a remarkable attention to detail. The harmonious balance of perfect setting and tasteful architecture will continue to please us every day of our holiday. The view of the environment is impressive; in the morning sun, you see untouched, graceful hills filled with almond and olive trees. In the south, there is the sea, and in the west, the towers of Noto, which is transformed at night, in the glow of the setting sun, into an Arabian dream city. These are all scenes that can be observed from the terraces and the villa’s rooftop.

 

The design of the house mirrors these wonderful environmental details seamlessly; each window, each terrace, is granted a unique view. The villa’s architecture makes sure these views are quite literally framed like paintings. The house is very spacious and comfortable. The living room and kitchen are seperated from the bedrooms by a long glass corridor. The big, fully equipped kitchen has a nice view of Noto, as does a second large terrace, which was our go-to place to eat in the evening, with a perfect built-in BBQ within arm’s reach. There’s an extra room next to the kitchen with a washing machine and extra cooling (a fridge and a freezer). The bedrooms are nicely put together and have excellent beds, ensuring a good night’s sleep. The interior is clean, stylish and indicative of the owners’ refined tastes. Everything that you need is there, from a hairdryer to an almond nutcracker.

 

Is Sicily too hot in the summer? At the top of our hill, we enjoyed a bright blue sky and a cool summer breeze all day long. Again: as the Greeks knew, it’s all about picking the right spot.

 

In short: when you’re drinking a nice glass and you’re close to the stars at night, it’s no coincidence that you start feeling almost exalted here. Everything in Casa Dietro Al Muro is aimed at giving the occupant a sense of enchantment, of absolute quiet and beauty.
